Quick answer Pickup times, real costs and which of the tours here fits you — in six short lines

A guided Mount Batur sunrise hike runs from $18 to $36 on the listings compared here, and the price is not what separates them. Pickup time is: 01:30 if you sleep in Kuta, Seminyak or Canggu, 02:15 to 02:30 if you sleep in Ubud, which buys you the best part of an hour in bed. A local guide is compulsory on this mountain — the Toya Bungkah trekking association does not allow unguided ascents — so the real comparison is group size, what is inside the price, and whether the morning ends in a hot spring, at a waterfall, or back at your hotel by eleven.

Key takeaways

  • Our pick for most people is the small-group trek capped at five walkers — same price as the classic, a fraction of the queue
  • Going alone is not cheaper: the permit is IDR 100,000 and the mandatory guide adds IDR 300,000–600,000 per group
  • Sunrise moves from about 05:50 in November to 06:35 in June, which is why pickup times shift through the year
  • It is 10–15°C on the rim before dawn against 30°C on the coast — what to wear is the most common regret
  • No hiking in your legs? The jeep tour reaches the caldera floor and the black lava, not the summit
  • Hot spring included costs about $9 more than the plain trek; the gate price at the springs is higher than that

Mount Batur Sunrise Hike Tours Compared

Every listing here runs daily with hotel pickup, the Kintamani entry ticket and a licensed local guide. Booking, payment and cancellation are handled by GetYourGuide; prices, ratings and review counts on this page were read from the listings in August 2026. Most of them are sold by the same operator, Your Bali Trekking Tour, which is worth knowing before you assume you are comparing six different companies — you are mostly comparing different mornings from one.

How to Choose Between These Mount Batur Tours

They all put you on the same mountain in the same hour. What differs is how many people walk beside you and what the day does after you come down.

You want the standard experience, done well

The classic sunrise hike with breakfast is the listing with 10,964 reviews behind it, and there is a reason it sits at the top of every search. A local guide, a headlamp and a trekking pole are handed to you at the trailhead, breakfast at the summit is bread, a boiled egg, biscuits, fruit and a steamed banana, and on the way down you get the Mt. Batur Lounge with modern toilets and a shower — a bigger deal than it sounds after four hours of volcanic dust. It is also the only listing here guided in French, Italian, German and Spanish as well as English and Indonesian.

The return stop is a coffee plantation with Luwak tasting. If caged civets are something you would rather not fund, the waterfall tour and the Kayu Padi route skip it.

One honest note that the star rating hides: GetYourGuide's own review summary for this tour says travellers want clearer information about optional costs on the mountain — blanket rental, hot drinks at the summit shack, and the motorbike lift some people take on the final stretch. None of those are in the ticket. Budget IDR 100,000, about $6, in small notes and the surprise disappears.

You do not want to climb inside a column of forty head-torches

Book the small-group trek. It is the same $27 as the classic and the listing caps the group at five participants, which changes the walk more than any other variable on this page. On a busy dry-season morning the main trail carries several hundred people; in a group of five your guide can actually stop, point at Rinjani coming out of the dark on the far side of the Lombok Strait, and wait while you catch your breath instead of herding.

The trade-offs are real and the listing states them: no children under eight, no travellers over 65, and pickup outside the core zone costs extra — $15 from Uluwatu, Sidemen or Candidasa, $25 from Lovina or Amed, per car. It also carries the plainest warning of the lot: there are wild macaques on the summit, do not touch them, and parts of the trail are genuinely dark.

If you are two people who want a private-feeling morning without paying private-tour money, this is the listing to take.

You want the hot spring, and you want it included

The trek and natural hot spring combination costs $36 against $27 for the plain trek. Entry to the lake-shore springs is about IDR 180,000 to 200,000 for foreign visitors at the gate, roughly $11 to $12, so the $9 gap covers the ticket and the extra transport with change left over. Your calves will make the argument for you by nine in the morning.

This listing is also the only one that publishes its pickup schedule by area: 01:30 from Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran and Canggu, 02:00 from Sanur, 02:15 and 02:30 from Ubud. Adult pricing applies to every participant regardless of age, and the operator does not take children under two. Pack swimwear where you can reach it — the springs come after the descent, not at the end of the day.

You cannot hike, or you are travelling with someone who cannot

The shared jeep sunrise tour is $21 and involves no walking. A 4WD collects you in the Ubud area, drives to a viewpoint on the caldera floor between roughly 04:30 and 08:00, crosses the black lava left by the eruptions of 1968 and 1974, and then continues to the hot spring.

Be clear about what you are buying: a view of Mount Batur at sunrise, not the view from its summit. Those are different photographs. The honest reasons to choose it are a knee, a pregnancy, small children, or a companion who would spend the whole climb miserable — not the $6 saving against the classic trek. The listing rules out travellers over 70 and anyone prone to altitude sickness, and asks for a change of clothes for the springs.

You want the emptier trail

The Kayu Padi route is the cheapest listing here at $18 and it approaches the summit from a less-used side. Entrance tickets to Kintamani and Mount Batur are inside the price rather than bolted on with a transfer option, hotel pickup is included outright, and after sunrise the guide walks the group around the crater to the steam vents before descending.

The caveat is its age. Twenty-three reviews against the four-figure counts on the others means the 4.82 rating rests on a small sample. Everything about the itinerary reads well and the trail is genuinely quieter; you are simply an early customer rather than the ten-thousandth.

You want the whole day, not just the morning

The sunrise hike with Tibumana Waterfall keeps going after the descent. You climb for about an hour and a half, walk the crater rim across black sand and old lava flows once the light is up, shower at the lounge, and then drive south into the jungle near Bangli for a swim under a single clean drop of water. It is the tour to book if this is your only free day and you would rather not spend the afternoon asleep.

Bring swimwear, a towel and dry clothes. The listing runs rain or shine and reserves the right to change the order for safety, which in practice means the waterfall gets dropped before the volcano does.

One operator, several mornings

All but one of the listings on this page are sold by Your Bali Trekking Tour; the Kayu Padi trek comes from a smaller outfit. That is normal on Mount Batur, where a handful of operators handle most of the volume through the platforms, but it does mean booking two of these on separate days gets you the same vans and often the same guides.

It also means the reviews reinforce each other. The praise is consistent across them — supportive guides, punctual drivers, good photographs taken for you. So are the complaints: the paid extras on the summit, and pre-hike information about difficulty that reviewers wish had been clearer. Both are addressed further down this page.

Trek or Jeep: Which Mount Batur Sunrise Tour Is Actually Worth It

The most-asked question about this volcano, answered without the marketing.

What the jeep gives you and what it takes away

The jeep does not climb Mount Batur. It works the caldera floor and the lower slopes — a designated sunrise viewpoint, the black lava fields, a photo stop or two — and it does that comfortably, warmly and without a headlamp. You leave later, you arrive back sooner, and nobody in the vehicle is out of breath.

What you give up is the thing the summit sells: standing above the cloud layer, looking down on the lake with Agung and Rinjani stacked behind it. From the caldera floor the volcano is in front of you, not beneath you. Both are worth seeing. Only one of them justifies losing a night's sleep, and if you are physically able to walk uphill for two hours, it is the trek.

So is the jeep tour worth it?

Yes, in four cases: a knee, a heart condition or a pregnancy that makes a steep dark trail a bad idea; children too small for two hours of climbing; a companion who would resent every step; or a second Batur morning after you have already done the summit.

No, if the reason is price. At $21 against $27 for the classic trek the saving is $6, and the jeep listing that includes the hot spring is a better comparison against the $36 trek-and-spring anyway. Choose it for your body, not your wallet.

And is the hike itself worth it?

For most people who ask, yes — with two honest conditions attached.

The first is weather. You are buying a sunrise, and in the wet season roughly one morning in three delivers cloud instead. Operators reschedule when the forecast is hopeless, but nobody can promise you a clear sky. If your trip has a single free morning in January, weigh that before booking.

The second is the crowd. On peak dry-season mornings several hundred people share a trail two to three kilometres long, and the summit shacks are busy. That is the trade for a mountain this accessible. The five-person group and the Kayu Padi route are the listings here that meaningfully thin it out.

A Mount Batur Sunrise Hike, Hour by Hour

This is the shape of the classic trek from Ubud in dry season. Everything shifts 20 to 40 minutes earlier if you are sleeping on the south coast, and about half an hour later in June and July when the sun itself is late.

  1. 02:15

    Hotel pickup in Ubud

The driver arrives between 02:15 and 02:30. From Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Nusa Dua or Jimbaran it is 01:30, from Sanur 02:00. Sleep in your hiking clothes and you buy yourself ten more minutes.

  2. 03:15

    Up through Kintamani

Roughly an hour of empty mountain road from Ubud, climbing the whole way. The temperature outside the window drops from the high twenties to the mid teens while you doze.

  3. 03:45

Meet the guide at the trailhead

A dirt clearing near Toya Bungkah, around 1,150 to 1,200 m. Headlamps, trekking poles and a short safety briefing. This is where the permit is handled and where the tour becomes a walk.

  4. 04:00

    Into the forest

The first section is sheltered, packed earth under trees, steady rather than steep. Groups spread out fast. Rest huts with toilets and a shop appear along the way.

  5. 05:00

    The open slope

The trees fall away and Lake Batur appears as a dark shape below you. Wind arrives with the view. The last twenty minutes turn loose and rocky — the hardest part of the climb by a distance.

  6. 05:30

    Summit, 1,717 m

Find a spot on the rim before the crowd does. Blankets rent for about IDR 50,000, roughly $3, and guides fetch hot tea or coffee from the summit shacks. This is the coldest half hour of the trip.

  7. 06:10

    Sunrise

Between 05:50 and 06:35 depending on the month. Light hits Agung first, then floods the caldera. Breakfast follows — eggs and bananas cooked in the volcano's steam vents, which is a gimmick and also genuinely good.

  8. 07:00

    Crater rim walk

Most guides loop part of the rim once it is warm, past the steam vents. Macaques appear here — the monkeys in everyone’s summit photos. Keep food and phones packed away, and do not feed them.

  9. 07:30

    Down

An hour to an hour and a half of loose volcanic scree in daylight, which is easier on the lungs and harder on the knees. This is where poles earn their place.

  10. 09:00

Shower, or hot spring, or waterfall

The lounge tours peel off for showers and coffee. The [hot-spring tour](#tour-2) heads to the lake shore, the [waterfall tour](#tour-6) drives south to Tibumana.

  11. 11:00

    Back in Ubud

Roughly 11:00 for Ubud, closer to 12:00 for south Bali, later if a hot spring or waterfall is in the plan. Most people write off the afternoon, and should.

How Difficult Is the Mount Batur Hike, Honestly

Not a mountaineering objective. Also not the gentle stroll some listings imply.

The numbers

The summit stands at 1,717 m and the trailhead near Toya Bungkah sits around 1,150 to 1,200 m, so you climb roughly 500 to 600 m over two to three kilometres. Most groups take 1.5 to 2.5 hours up and about an hour to an hour and a half down. There is no exposure, no scrambling and no altitude problem at this height — the difficulty is entirely in the gradient, the dark and the hour.

Who actually struggles

Reviewers who found it hard are, almost without exception, people who did not expect any effort at all. GetYourGuide's own summary of the small-group trek puts it plainly: travellers want clearer guidance on difficulty before the hike. Jeroen from the Netherlands, who went in August 2026, gave the classic trek five stars and still wrote that it 'does require a reasonable level of fitness'.

The operators' own limits are the best guide. Most listings here will not take pregnant travellers, people with back or heart problems, or wheelchair users. One rules out children under eight and travellers over 65. The classic trek suggests 18 as a minimum age while allowing fit children. If you can climb stairs for an hour without stopping, you will be fine. If you cannot, the jeep exists for exactly this reason and there is no shame in it.

The bit nobody warns you about

Coming down is where people fall. The scree that felt grippy under a head-torch turns into ball bearings in daylight when your legs are tired. Take the trekking pole your guide offers even if you felt silly carrying it up, and wear shoes with an actual tread.

Trainers are fine; the flip-flops that a surprising number of people arrive in are not.

What a Mount Batur Sunrise Tour Costs, and What Going Alone Costs

The cheapest way up this volcano is not the one that looks cheapest.

You cannot walk up on your own

Mount Batur is managed by the local guides' association at Toya Bungkah, HPPGB, and independent ascents are not permitted. Turning up at the trailhead at four in the morning without a guide gets you turned back, not a bargain. That is the single fact that decides the maths below.

Rates checked in August 2026, at roughly IDR 16,300 to the US dollar.

The line items

Arranged yourself, the mountain costs the permit plus a guide plus getting there — and the guide fee is per group, so the sum only works if there are several of you. Booked as a package, all of it is inside one price, and the volume operators sell those packages for less than the parts.

What you pay forArranged yourselfInside a booked tour
Entrance permitIDR 100,000 (~$6) per personIncluded
Local guide (mandatory)IDR 300,000–600,000 (~$18–37) per groupIncluded
Transport from UbudDriver or scooter, 2 hours of night drivingIncluded, hotel to hotel
Breakfast and hot drinkBought on the summitIncluded
Typical local packageIDR 600,000–800,000 (~$37–49) per person$18–36 on the listings here

Why the platform prices are lower

The IDR 600,000 to 800,000 figure is what walk-up and hotel-desk bookings pay locally. The listings on this page run $18 to $36 because they sell hundreds of seats a week and price for volume. That is the whole arbitrage, and it is why booking ahead on a platform beats arranging it from your hotel lobby the night before.

What is not included anywhere: the extras sold on the mountain itself. A blanket at the summit is about IDR 50,000. A hot drink from the shack is IDR 20,000 to 30,000. The motorbike lift up the final steep section, which appears when you look tired, is negotiated on the spot and is the one reviewers most often mention being surprised by. Carry IDR 100,000 to 150,000 in small notes and none of it stings.

Best Time for a Mount Batur Sunrise Hike, Month by Month

Bars show the average dawn temperature at Kintamani caldera level in Celsius — the number that matters when you are sitting still on the rim at 05:30, not the coastal forecast on your phone. Data is the 2016–2025 ERA5 reanalysis for the Batur trailhead area at 1,532 m; the summit runs about a degree colder again, and the wind takes more. Rainfall totals below are from the same series.

Sunrise itself moves through the year: about 05:50 in late October and November, about 06:35 in June and July. Operators shift pickup accordingly, so confirm your time the evening before rather than assuming last week's schedule. Our [month-by-month guide to the best time to hike Mount Batur](/best-time-mount-batur-sunrise/) has the full table. And check the forecast for a clear morning, not just a clear night — Batur makes its own cloud after first light.

Line of head-torches climbing the dark forest section of the trail on an early Mount Batur sunrise hike tour, Bali
The first ninety minutes happen entirely by headlamp. In peak season the trail below you looks like a runway.

The Cold at the Summit, and What to Wear

The single most repeated regret on this mountain has nothing to do with which tour people booked.

Fourteen degrees feels different when you are wet

Dawn on the rim runs 10 to 15°C, and you arrive at it soaked in sweat from climbing 600 m in the dark. Then you sit still for forty minutes in wind, at the coldest moment of the day, in clothes you chose for a Bali beach holiday. That is why people rent blankets at IDR 50,000 and describe it afterwards as the best money they spent.

Bring a windproof layer. Not a fleece, not a hoodie — something that stops the wind. Everything else on the list matters less than that one item.

The actual packing list

Layers you can shed on the way up and pile on at the top: a t-shirt, a light mid-layer and a windbreaker. Trainers with tread, or hiking shoes if you brought them. A small bag, because you will carry the mid-layer for the first hour.

Gloves and a beanie sound absurd in Bali and are worth their weight in July and August. Bring your own water — one bottle is usually included, and it is not enough for four hours. Cash in small notes for the summit extras. A power bank, because cold flattens phone batteries exactly when the sky turns orange.

What you do not need: hiking poles, a headlamp or a torch. Every listing here supplies them at the trailhead.

Sunrise is only the first half

By 07:30 the sun is up and the same slope that was 14°C is pleasant, then warm. Sunglasses and sunscreen belong in the bag with the beanie — the descent is exposed and there is no shade on the open section. It is a fair summary of this mountain that you need a windbreaker and factor 50 within three hours of each other.

Hot Springs, Waterfalls and Coffee: Which Add-On Is Worth Paying For

Every tour here bolts something onto the descent. They are not equally good value.

The hot springs, at the gate and in a package

The thermal pools on the shore of Lake Batur — Toya Devasya and the Batur Natural Hot Spring complex next door — charge foreign visitors roughly IDR 180,000 to 200,000, about $11 to $12, at the gate in 2026, and rates vary by pool and package. Against that, the $9 gap between the $27 trek and the $36 trek with the spring included is the clearest saving on this page, and it lands at the moment your legs most want it.

The jeep tour includes the springs on one of its options too, which makes it the softest version of a Batur morning available: no climbing, warm water, home by lunch.

Tibumana Waterfall

The waterfall tour drives south into Bangli after the descent to a single clean drop into a jungle pool. It is a genuinely pretty spot and far less trafficked than Bali's famous waterfalls, and it turns a sunrise into a full day out.

It is also the option most likely to leave you wrecked. You will have been awake since half past one, walked four hours and then driven an hour to go swimming. Book it if you have a lazy day afterwards, not if you fly out that evening.

The coffee plantation

Two of the listings stop at a Luwak coffee plantation on the way home. You will be shown civets, offered a tasting flight and given the chance to buy coffee at tourist prices.

Some plantations in Bali keep civets in small cages, which is the reason to have an opinion about this stop before you are standing in front of one. If it is not for you, the Kayu Padi route and the waterfall tour do not include it.

Safety, Guides and the Rules on a Sacred Volcano

Mount Batur is active, monitored, and holy. All three shape how you visit it.

The volcano's current status

Batur last erupted in 2000. Indonesia's volcanology agency, PVMBG, publishes a daily bulletin through MAGMA Indonesia, and in the report dated 25 August 2026 the volcano sits at Level I (Normal), the lowest of the four alert levels. The standing recommendation attached to that level is specific: visitors should not enter or spend the night inside the craters themselves. Sunrise treks follow the outer rim, which is why they run normally at Level I.

Status can change. Check the MAGMA bulletin before you travel rather than trusting any tour page, including this one, and expect operators to cancel and refund if the level rises.

Why the guide is not optional

The Toya Bungkah trekking association, HPPGB, controls access to the trail and requires every visitor to walk with one of its licensed local guides. This is not a formality invented for tourists — the trail is unlit, the upper section is loose, and the association is also how trekking income stays in the villages inside the caldera.

In practice it means your tour price already contains a guide, and it means the 'cheap' alternative of hiking alone at 4am does not exist. Every listing on this page includes a licensed guide by default.

The mountain ban you may have read about

In 2023 Bali's governor announced a ban on climbing all 22 of the island's mountains, after several incidents of tourists behaving badly on sites Balinese Hindus consider sacred. It made international headlines and it was never enforced on Batur — trekking has continued without interruption since, and the proposal was subsequently shelved.

What has not changed is why it was proposed. These are holy mountains. Dress reasonably, do not climb on shrines, take your rubbish down with you, and skip the summit photoshoot ideas that got people deported. The guides will tell you the same, more politely.

Wildlife and small print

Macaques live along the summit ridge and are entirely unbothered by people. They will take food out of an open bag. Keep snacks sealed, keep your phone in your hand or your pocket, and do not feed or touch them — one listing bans feeding, touching and riding animals outright.

Insurance is excluded from every listing here, and many standard travel policies treat volcano trekking as an adventure activity. Check your cover before you go rather than after.

Mount Batur Sunrise Hike Tours: Questions Travellers Ask

How long does it take to hike Mount Batur for sunrise?

One and a half to two and a half hours up, and an hour to an hour and a half back down, over two to three kilometres each way with about 500 to 600 m of climbing. Add the summit stop and you are on the mountain for roughly four hours. Door to door the tours run 5 to 11 hours depending on where you sleep and what is bolted onto the descent — the classic trek has you back in Ubud around 11:00, the hot-spring version closer to early afternoon.

How difficult is the Mount Batur hike?

Moderate. There is no scrambling, no exposure and no altitude issue at 1,717 m, but the gradient is constant and the final twenty minutes are loose volcanic scree. If you can climb stairs for an hour without stopping you will manage it. Several listings exclude pregnant travellers and people with heart or back problems, one rules out children under eight and travellers over 65. Full difficulty breakdown.

Is the Mount Batur sunrise hike worth it?

For most people, yes — standing above the cloud with Lake Batur below you and Agung and Rinjani on the horizon is worth one bad night's sleep. Two honest caveats: in wet season roughly one morning in three is clouded out, and on peak dry-season mornings several hundred people share the trail. Book the five-person group or the quieter Kayu Padi route if crowds would spoil it, and read our honest worth-it verdict first.

Is the Mount Batur sunrise jeep tour worth it?

It is, if you cannot or would rather not climb. The jeep drives the caldera floor and the black lava fields to a sunrise viewpoint — a view of the volcano rather than from it — with no walking involved, and one option includes the hot spring. At $21 against $27 for the trek it is not a money-saver, so choose it for a knee, a pregnancy, small children or a reluctant companion. Trek versus jeep, in full.

How much does a Mount Batur sunrise tour cost?

The listings compared here run $18 to $36 per adult, checked in August 2026. Arranged locally the same morning costs more: the permit is IDR 100,000 per person, a mandatory HPPGB guide is IDR 300,000 to 600,000 per group, and hotel-desk packages sit at IDR 600,000 to 800,000. Budget another IDR 100,000 in small notes for blankets, hot drinks and other summit extras that no ticket covers. Full cost breakdown.

What time does the sun rise on Mount Batur?

Between about 05:50 in late October and November and about 06:35 in June and July. Groups aim to be on the rim by 05:15 to 05:45, which is what drives pickup back to 01:30 on the south coast and 02:15 to 02:30 in Ubud. Confirm your pickup time with the operator the evening before — it moves with the season, not with the tour you booked.

Do I need a guide to hike Mount Batur?

Yes. The local trekking association at Toya Bungkah, HPPGB, controls the trail and requires a licensed local guide for every visitor; unguided ascents are turned back. Every tour on this page includes one, so there is no version of this hike where skipping the guide saves you money. Why the rule exists, and what happens if you try to walk up alone.

Is Mount Batur safe to climb right now?

PVMBG's bulletin of 25 August 2026 places Batur at Level I (Normal), the lowest of Indonesia's four alert levels, with a standing instruction not to enter or overnight inside the craters. Sunrise treks follow the outer rim and run normally at that level. Check the MAGMA Indonesia bulletin before you travel; operators cancel and refund if the level rises. Current status.

What should I wear for the Mount Batur sunrise hike?

A windproof outer layer above everything else — dawn on the rim is 10 to 15°C with wind, and you arrive sweating. Add a mid-layer, trainers with tread, gloves and a beanie in July and August, and sunglasses plus sunscreen for the exposed descent. Blankets rent at the top for about IDR 50,000 if you get it wrong. Full packing list, month by month.

Is hiking still banned on Bali's mountains?

No. The 2023 announcement covering all 22 of the island's mountains was never enforced on Batur and was later shelved; treks have run continuously throughout. What does apply is the licensed-guide requirement and the expectation that you treat a sacred mountain as one — modest clothing, no climbing on shrines, no rubbish left behind.

Pick the morning that suits your legs: a five-person summit group, the quiet Kayu Padi trail, or a jeep to the caldera floor with no climbing at all.

Dry-season dates from June to September fill first, and pickup slots go before the tour does

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup on every listing here, and reserve now, pay later on all of them.
